For many of you who have been to Portugal, you sure know this little village in Coimbra. I remember going when I was a little girl and I love taking the kids there. For the ones who haven’t been there yet, I’m talking about a theme park dedicated to children, where portuguese architecture is being depicted in a tiny scale, as if we were visiting Jonathan Swift’s country of the Lilliputs. It was found in 1940 by a teacher called Bissaya Barreto and it’s divided into three areas.

  • The first is built around the fourtys and it’s a composition of rural portuguese houses, typical for the different regions, fruit & vegetable gardens, chapels, stables, etc. all of these in a downsized picture; furthermore the most important monuments of Coimbra. Particularly this is the best zone for us, because kids love go into the houses and leaning out the balcony.

  • The second area in “Portugal dos Pequeninhos” is where you can find the most representative monuments in all of Portugal, where the representation of the “Convento de Cristo” (Tomar) and “Palacio de Sintra” in mini size are quite striking.

  • The third phase is from the ending of fiftys, and recopile monuments from african countries with portuguese idiom: Brasil, Macao, Timor; as well as Madeira and Azores. We walk along places visited by portuguese conquerors and we find a map to show us the discovers from the century XV and XVI.

If you have little children and you would like to take them to this little mini village, I’m sure they will love walking along its small streets, its town squares, where they can see a little mill, a little Church, and even a lighthouse in small oversize.
