Since through Sweet Ale I try to discover a little more of Galicia; I could not leave unmentioned a place of our land as emblematic as the Cathedrals’ Beach. This 1400 meters of sandy beach are one of the most visited places in Galicia. It has been declared a National Monument by the Ministry of Environment of the Government of Galicia .

Walking along this part of the coast of Lugo is something one should not miss if you visit Galicia. Contemplating the rock formations, the cliffs of the beach and the waves of the Cantabrian Sea breaking against the coast, is a stunning view. This beach is known by the name of the Cathedrals, because of the set of cliffs reminding of the buttresses of a Cathedral, they reach up to 32 meters high. They have been formed by the erosion of wind and strong waves, which has resulted in one of the most impressive landscapes you have ever seen.

This beach is located near the border with Asturias, in the parish of » Devesa «, about 12 km away from Ribadeo. In summer it is a very popular tourist area, but right on the descent to the beach, there are two large parkings lots. Personally I prefer walking along this beach in winter, when the spectacle of nature and the sea is best enjoyed. Cathedrals’ Beach is part of a tour of about 25 km along the coast , from Rinlo village until Ribadeo.

The views from the coast are wonderful, but if you want to see them more closely and walk along the beach; you have to do it at low tide and taking into account the times when the tide rises. It is highly recommended to learn the tide table, because walking under the arches and strolling along the cliffs worths.
