Good morning !! Taking advantage of the weather we have been enjoying lately in Galicia, we will make a «Los lunes al sol» (as the title of a Spanish movie) and jump on board of a boat. So today, we will take the beach basket and hike to a beautiful island, called the Island of Ons, in the estuary of Pontevedra and then we will eat an octopus fish stew and then we will go for a swim on the. There will be plenty of everything; how do you feel about the plan? So… here we go !!

There are many boats leaving from several points of the Ría de Pontevedra to the island of Ons. They are the Naviera Mar de Ons and the Pirates of Nabia. We went to Bueu (Pontevedra) and from there we took the Pirates of Nabia to the Island of Ons. The boat ride was wonderful and the children were happy.

The Ons Island are part of the National Maritime-Terrestrial Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, which are also part of the famous Cies Islands (being considered among the most beautiful in the world), and the Islands of Sálvora and Cortegada. This area of the Rias Baixas is gorgeous, because the islands offer mountainous landscapes, a coastline of rugged cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, and a drier climate quite different from the rest of the Ria. It is a natural environment and an area of biologically rich marine fauna, which is the main reason we have such good seafood and seafood products in our waters.

One of the advantages of the Ons Island is that it receives far less visitors than the Cíes Islands, while, if you go on a private boat, you will need an anchoring permission, since the flow of people has been restricted. So Ons is a perfect choice to visit this area of Galicia.

There are several well-signposted trails on the island –link – If you decide to go for this excursion my recommendation is to order the caldeirada octopus and fish at the Bar O Pirata.

We, as we went with quite a few kids and it was hot, did the route that leads around the island, passing the lighthouse and reaching the Melide beach. There we spent the afternoon. The beaches on the eastern side of the island are the best. Of fine white sand and, doubtless, really icy waters, though also crystal clear.

The famous Buraco do Inferno is also worth a visit. In Galicia we love legends and popular wisdom says that from here you can hear the cries of the souls of those who suffer tormented for their sins. Well .. this is that legend says!bajar-infiernoEsperamos que os haya gustado esta excursión de Sweet Ale y que si tenéis planeada una visita a Galicia, no dejéis de disfrutar de esta isla de las Rías Baixas. Os esperamos!! Feliz Lunes!!

We hope you enjoyed this Sweet Ale tour and if you have planned to visit Galicia, do not miss to enjoy this island in the Rias Baixas. We wait for you!!!
