We start our rout in Sintra, where, since this is about walking, we leave our car. Once arrived there it is most recommendable to let yourself be guided by intuition and senses in the historical part of town, which, as it commonly happens to Portuguese town, is made of narrow streets paved with cobblestones, many of them taking us up the hills, which is certainly part of their charm. So enjoy getting carried away in the numerous narrow streets crammed with souvenir and pastry shops and don’t miss out on trying the traditional queijadas, tasty little cheese cakes. The most famous, by the way, are those of  “A Periquita”. After roaming the little village of Sintra we walk up the hill which later on becomes a path leading through and along the Serra de Sintra.  IMG_5359-imp

The Sierra da Sintra was declared a World Herritage Site by the UNESCO in 1994, ought to its natural as well as architectural whole. Strolling through these large and leafy forests is an experience you simply can’t miss. One of the main charms of this mountain range lies in the flora and fauna which constitute the so-called “green lungs” of the Costa de Estoril. There is a number of various theme led routes, besides the various spots worth a stop-off visit, as there is for instance Castelo dos Mouros, the Palacio da Pena and the Quinta da Regaleira.

In order to visit the sights there is an option to catch a bus taking you around and back to the starting point, thus leaving it entirely up to you where to get on and off at any point you feel like. In an additional post I will include some more detailed information concerning the Palacio da Pena as the most significant sight of the Sierra da Sintra.

Considering how we love walking, and we make sure kids exercise; we walked down taking the time and stopping off whenever it felt convenient and without rushing anywhere. Every time we walked this route starting at the village of Sintra it took us about 2 hours, walking the mountain range across the hill situated at about 500 metres above sea level. It is some comfortable 3 kilometres long.

As we climb up the hill which earlier was a paved road now with every further step transformes into a narrowing path, we are moving into an increasingly dense forest, sorrounded by a microclimate that provides a lot of humidity to the air, but is transformed into an increasingly beautiful and exuberant vegetation. There are botanical species from around the world.

In fact this environment was the place chosen by kings and nobles as a resting place, and a recurring subject in literature and was called by Lord Byron the «Glorious Eden».

At this point of the route the need to make a halt is clearly sensible, the children begin to despair. So sitting on one of the many stone benches converted into viewpoints and we make a stop.

Walking this route is really worthwile and truly prescious, and we are entertaining ourselves uphill as we keep climbing, while there are death slides at many points throughout the mountains, and it’s great fun seeing how the more daring go touring this area.

As a curious detail we pass by the house of Hans Christensen who was in Sintra in 1866, and of which he wrote «each foreigner can find a piece of homeland in Sintra. It was here where he discovered Denmark, but believed to have also found many pieces of other lands».

After visiting Serra de Sintra it’s worth having a lunch break at the “Tacho Real” Restaurant; doubtlessly one of the better restaurants in the area. Being just a five minutes drive away from the Palacio da Pena it’s located in an imposing location so that after our visit we dropped in.
