We are located in the Vaucluse region. There we will see a medieval village » stuck » literally in a valley, it is Fontaine de Vaucluse, named » vallis claus», which means “closed valley”. The visit is quite worthwhile, although it is a tourist town, because its main feature is that it’s located at the foot of a cliff 230m high, just where the Sorgue river rises. Well, it’s right at this spot, where the river springs from the soil, actually said to spring from a chasm. It’s gorgeous to see the way a lagoon of green water was formed and nobody knows how deep it exactly is, since no one has got deeper than 315 meters.

Walking along the banks of the River Sorgue is a must. What is most striking is a big wheel that is part of an ancient mill. A paper mill, which continues manufacturing paper following the same procedures it followed in the fifteenth century.

Within walking a long distance there is the village of L’ Isle sur la Sorgue. This little town is like an island surrounded by canals, terraces above the river, a lively atmosphere and many small shops of local crafts and lavender.

The Hotel du Poète is a perefect place to stay for a few days and explore this area. It is on the banks of the River Sorgue and has an outdoor pool perfect for sunny days, where the sound of the river water flowing is heard, which flows under the Hotel terraces. The rooms are rather spacious, but if you have more than two children you will have to book two rooms, as it happened to us. The best thing about the hotel is the location, since you can walk down a path among trees to the Fontaine de Vaucluse and L’ Isle sur la Sorgue.

Once sattled in the area going to Gordes is aanother must . One of the most beautiful villages in France. It is located 370 meters above sea level on the hills of Vaucluse and was an inspiration for artists such as Chagall. A town like taken out of a fairy tale, with its houses, its square, its castle, its hill. This beautiful village is ideal for exploring the cobbled streets and seeing the sand-colored stone of its buildings, especially at sunset, where the color of the stone becomes warmer.

From there we will visit the Abbey of Senanques, which is at a 10 minutes drive by car. This twelfth-century Cistercian Abbey has the peculiarity that the monks who live there are dedicated to the cultivation of lavender and its commerce. This image of lavender fields and the Abbey in the back is the one which comes to our minds when we are thinking of lavender fields in Provence, right in this Abbey Senanques.

After visiting the surroundings, nothing better than a break and dinner on the banks of the River Sorgue, in a highly recommended place called La Figuiere (Chemin de la Grangette, 84800 Fontaine de Vaucluse). There, in a lovely terrace and where we fell very comfortable and well cared for, we had dinner every night while we were in this area.
